Cusco isn’t just the gateway to Machu Picchu — it’s a living landscape where ancient traditions meet breathtaking trails. If you’re a runner or adventurous traveler looking to experience the real Andes, this unique Run + Huatia cultural immersion combines highland scenery, local history, and an unforgettable taste of Andean life.
The Journey on Foot
Your day begins high above the Incan ceremonial site of Tambomachay, where crisp mountain air and sweeping views set the stage. From here, gentle downhill trails wind through chacras — traditional Andean farmlands — alongside rolling hills and fragrant eucalyptus groves. It’s an easy 5 km jog (or fast-paced hike) that lets you soak up the sights and sounds of rural Cusco.
The Huatia Experience
In the small farming community of Pucará, you’ll step into a tradition dating back to pre-Inca times. A huatia is an earthen oven built by hand, heated with stones and fueled by firewood, still used by Andean families to cook fresh potatoes during harvest season.
Together with local hosts, you’ll build and fire the huatia, learn about centuries-old farming techniques, and finally break it open to share steaming potatoes straight from the earth — simple, hearty, and unforgettable.
The Final Stretch to Cusco
Recharged and fueled by your huatia feast, the journey continues along Incan trails to the dramatic rock formations of the Devil’s Balcony. The route then follows the newly restored Qhapaq Ñan — the ancient Inca road — descending all the way into San Blas, Cusco’s historic artisan quarter. This final stretch blends adventure with history, finishing right in the heart of the city.
Why It’s Special
This isn’t just a run. It’s a cultural exchange, a celebration of Andean heritage, and a rare chance to explore Cusco far from the crowds. Whether you’re an experienced trail runner or simply looking for an active way to connect with local traditions, the Run + Huatia experience is as enriching as it is beautiful.
